First Weeks of Summer: Friends, Beach, Repeat.

Every Sunday, Kate adds to our tuna melt sandwiches with her fruit platter.  She often makes faces out of food she cuts up or keeps it classy and artistic.
Owen takes a late nap on Sundays and wakes up in a fog.  Brady played him out of his funk one afternoon.
The first weeks of summer were spent between the park at Poipu and Brenneckes.  Kate started the summer believing she could not handle the waves here, but learned within one afternoon that she could do it, even with the boulders in the water to dodge and the big swells of summer.
Getting kids together for the beach has been so easy.  Every day, my kids have had pals at the beach, most planned and some coincidental.
Owen has not shortage of people wanting to hold his hand and explore the rocks with him.  He wants nothing to do with the water which makes it easier for me to jump in with Kate and play for a few minutes while another mama generously keeps track of him.

Sheratons is of course another favorite.  A few days landed us there, and on this day, Kate was only ok with heading to the surf beach if she could catch a few waves later at Brenneckes, so we made it happen.

Finn and Shay spent the day at the beach, then at our house for the afternoon.

My favorite new development around here is Zac fixing his own lunches.  He is hard to please with lunch food because, as he puts it, "I only like so-called 'unhealthy food.'"  Eggs and a tortilla is his favorite combo currently.
We've hosted dinners every Sunday night of summer, and corn made it on the menu per Brady's request one evening.  My kids love it like candy and Owen demands his own piece.

Shay had plenty of playdates.  Kate complains that her friends like Owen more than her, but who doesn't love a 2-year-old boy willing to be dressed as a princess?

Serious girl-time at Brenneckes!

Tate dotes on Owen, too.
The third week of summer, the kids were both involved in summer camps.  Zachary did Junior Lifeguard training and Kate participated in a KUGA dance camp.  Both of them spent their days active and came home exhausted.  Kate's camp started earlier in the morning so we do the park every morning with just the boys.

Zachary loved his solo time with Owen.
Kate trained for her final performance, learning 27 minutes of choreography originally designed for teenagers.  She was able to get the music score and has since danced it herself and with Daysha at least a dozen times.

Zac and David buried sand balls every day and optimistically hoped to find them unscathed each day.

Vicki splurged on big treats for them after every day of training.  Zac came home and told me with huge eyes that he was allowed to order a LARGE.

Saturday, we started the morning with a cooked breakfast that Zac butchered with eggs, ketchup, and syrup.  Breakfast of champions and the overweight.
Brady installed Owen's new bike front-rider and we took it out for a spin on the Kapaa Bike Path.
Four miles is a hard ride for Kate, especially after biking three miles earlier with Brady on his morning run.
Nic and Heidi plus kids joined us for the day's adventures.

We ended with a few turns on the rope swing.

Next up, the Ho'opi'i Falls trail.  We have not hike much with the constant and heavy rain of the Spring.
Mahjinka's family and father joined us for the hike to waterfalls and a rope swing.

Each of us took turns swinging into the water and holding our breath to avoid ingesting any leptospirosis.  Interestingly, Mahjinka, Ty and Heidi all ended up with lepto symptoms two weeks later--painful and ill.

The best part of the day was swinging on vines like monkeys.  Zac was flying high, so I tried it against my better judgement.  After I safely swung, Brady went for it and fell hard but luckily injury-free.  Beautiful adventure weeks!
