A couple weeks ago we mentioned to Nic and Heidi that we wanted to kayak the north shore rivers. They kept us from being "all talk" and we went last weekend. It was a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine, which is definitely a plus when you are on the river in the chilly water.
This was Shay and Ty's first kayak trip. The kiddos all started by getting powered up with Gogurts.
The great thing about Brady is he doesn't make me do any prep work for kayak trips. It's kind of a pain to get the thing all set up, strapped in, etc. I just watch and occasionally snap a photo.
Ty kept doing actions, and Shay and Zac would mimic every little thing.
Here's the first river: Kalihiwai. It starts at a gorgeous north shore beach, and supposedly travels up to a waterfall. About one mile in, the river turned into a stream, and we could go no further. We will wait for some rainfalls and try this one again.
The Kalihiwai beach we will definitely go to sometime soon. I guess the surf gets pretty nice here. Brady will love it.
We couldn't go home after only a couple miles of kayaking, so we did the Hanalei river, too (but only after getting the best shave ice we've had here). There were fish jumping all over the place and the backdrop was gorgeous--mountains with water falls (and power lines, but forgive that...Kauai does not hide power lines underground). We actually decided that Hanalei river is the one you should do when you visit.
Zac loved taking a turn with the paddle, but we had to give him a time limit or the current would turn us around (and you know, it just takes forever when the 2 year old paddles). At one point, he got impatient and wanted to grab it back from me. I told him, in my very rational parenting voice, that if he did it again I would put him in the cold water. He did it, and I started picking him up to dip him in. He freaked out, stopped what he was doing, and I was quickly delivered from an empty threat.
If I didn't feel weird about sending out a swimsuit picture, I might use this one at Christmas.
We made it to the bridge and then turned around. I don't know why, but this bridge makes me feel sentimental.
I had to blog this today to make me feel better about our current weekend. Brady worked, and we followed the BYU v. TCU and the OSU v. Wisconsin games last night. Bummer. Best football stat of the day, even beating out Wisconsin's opening (and sadly, scoring) play:
BYU's offensive yards in the first half: 13.
Go Cougs.

Oh my BYU. I asked my dad why they stink this year. We were out to lunch and he got this really dissapointed look on his face and just shook his head. He is a season ticket holder and they go to all the home games.
Kayaking with an almost 3 year old. Well your son is probably more well behaved. I shudder to think about doing that with Andrew. I'd probably have to swim along side.
Beautiful pictures (as usual). Do you guys ever get tired of hearing that?
Next time we come to Hawaii we have got to go kayaking. Those pictures are beautiful. Any where you go in Kauai is beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I love the "next time we come to Hawaii" comments! YAY!!!
I promise there are ugly places here, too. I went to a beach today that was perfect if you only look at the ocean, but brown and dead every where else!
Oh good, another must do so we do have to come back.
Does the bridge remind you of Ohio? Of course! Aw, now that makes me excited! JK! I know, I knooooow.
